Hearing Aid Adaptation

Starting from: 2.500 €
Device adaptation is the process by which the brain and auditory system adjust to the new, electrically-based sounds produced by the sound processor attached after cochlear implant surgery. While conventional hearing aids amplify sound intensity, the cochlear implant converts sound into electrical signals and directly stimulates the auditory nerve; therefore, the adaptation process works differently both technically and biologically.

Highlights

✓

How the Process Works

Brain Adaptation: It takes time for the brain to interpret new electrical signals as sound and speech.
✓Speech and Language Therapy: Through regular sessions, the ability to distinguish sounds, recognize words, and develop speech skills are improved.
✓

Basic Stages of Device Adaptation

Frequency Mapping: The audiologist uses a computer to adjust the upper and lower limits of the electrical current that the electrodes will deliver.
✓Gradual Sound Increase: At initial activation, sounds are at the lowest level that will not cause discomfort; over time, the sound level is gradually increased according to the brain's adaptation rate.
✓Mechanical Sound Perception: In the first days, sounds may seem metallic, robotic, whistling-like, or very mechanical to the patient.
✓Naturalization Process: As the brain processes these new signals, mechanical sounds gradually give way to normal human voices and environmental noise.
✓

Factors Affecting Adaptation Duration

Duration of Hearing Loss: The shorter the time between hearing loss and surgery, the faster the adaptation.
✓Age and Development: In children with congenital hearing loss who receive implantation at an early age (especially at 1-2 years old), brain plasticity is high, so adaptation is very rapid.
✓Language Background: Adults who could speak and hear before the hearing loss occurred find it easier to go through the process by matching sounds with old memories.
✓

Remote Adjustment (Remote Programming)

Thanks to the developing "Telehealth" infrastructure and smartphone applications, modern implant brands (such as Cochlear, MED-EL, or Advanced Bionics) offer remote adjustment support.
✓Initial Adjustment Cannot Be Done Remotely: The initial activation and first mapping (gradual sound opening) performed 2-4 weeks after surgery must be done in a clinical setting, face-to-face with an audiologist.
✓Follow-up Appointments and Fine Adjustments: Routine follow-up appointments during the device adaptation process, sound level updates, or simple program changes can be performed remotely by the audiologist through an internet connection and mobile application (Remote Care) without the patient needing to leave home.

Recovery Process

The rehabilitation process can last from several months to 1 year or longer, depending on the person's age and hearing history.
